What this book is

Human Design is fifty years old, was received in a vision, and has no research behind it whatsoever. This book says that on page one and then takes the system seriously anyway — because the questions it asks about energy turn out to be good ones regardless of where they came from.

The five types and how each is built to spend energy. The seven inner authorities and where your decisions are actually made. Then the Projector worked all the way through in depth: the strategy explained, what counts as an invitation and what does not, a sustainable working week, the signs of burnout, and the specific bitterness that comes from working like a type you are not.

Six voices read each type, and the Skeptic is given real room.

Where this comes from

Earliest surviving evidence

A rented room on Ibiza at night, a bare bulb over a table buried in handwritten pages.

Ra Uru Hu's account of an eight-day transmission on Ibiza

Ibiza, Spain · English · 1987

Alan Robert Krakower, born Montreal 1948, a former advertising man and magazine publisher living on Ibiza, reported that on the evening of 3 January 1987 he was contacted by a Voice, and that over the following eight days and nights, barely sleeping, he wrote down the system. He took the name Ra Uru Hu and taught it until his death in 2011. The account is his and has never been corroborated or contested by any other party, because there was no other party.

How it reached you

  1. 1987

    Ra Uru Hu

The system is assembled from four existing bodies of material — the I Ching hexagrams, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, the kabbalistic Tree of Life and Western astrology — plus a neutrino-based mechanism of his own.

  2. 1992

    The International Human Design School

Formal training, certification and licensed analysts begin.

  3. 2018

    Instagram and the wellness market

The system reaches a mass audience in simplified form — usually the five types alone, detached from the rest.

The version you have actually met

1987 · Ra Uru Hu (Alan Krakower)

Human Design is the youngest system in this series by a wide margin, has a single named author, an exact date, and a stated mechanism that makes physical claims.

What you have probably been told

Human Design synthesises ancient wisdom traditions.

It borrows vocabulary from four of them. None of the four contains anything resembling the bodygraph, the types, the authorities or the profile lines, and no practitioner of any of the four would recognise the result.

Comparison with the I Ching, tantric and kabbalistic sources

The system is based on neutrino physics.

Neutrinos are real and pass through matter constantly. They interact so weakly that detecting them requires instruments the size of buildings; they carry no information about a birth moment and no mechanism has ever been proposed for how they would imprint one. The claim is decorative.

Standard particle physics

What survives the correction

The strategy-and-authority advice — wait for a response, sleep on it, notice where in your body a yes actually registers — is ordinary decision hygiene, and it is not bad decision hygiene. A reader can take that and leave the cosmology, and this volume tells them so.

What can be established

No research behind it

What survives

The behavioural advice, stripped of the cosmology. Wait for clarity before committing; notice where in your body a yes actually registers; observe that you decide better after sleeping on it than in the moment. That is ordinary, decent decision hygiene and it survives the removal of everything else.

What does not

Every specific claim. No study of any kind has been published on Human Design — not a validity study, not a reliability study, not a single trial. The stated mechanism, neutrino imprinting at birth, has no physical basis: neutrinos interact so weakly that detection requires instruments the size of buildings, and no route from them to a personality has ever been proposed.

What has been tested

No study of this system has been published — not a weak one, not a disputed one, none at all. That is a statement about the literature and not about the practice, and this page would say so just as plainly if the reverse were true.

What would change this rating

Almost anything. A test-retest study. A blinded study in which readers assign types to anonymised profiles above chance. Any published data whatsoever would move this off the bottom rung, and after thirty-nine years there is none.

A rating that no possible finding could alter is an opinion. Every volume names the result that would move it.

What it cannot establish

No research supports this system. It is included for the questions it asks. The attestation date given for this system (1987) rests on Ra Uru Hu's account of the system's reception; it dates the system, not any claim the system makes.

Every volume states its own limits. See all 23.

Generator

Vol. 20 · The Five Types

The Astrologer

As a Generator, you're in rhythm with solar cycles—daytime energy, nighttime depletion. Honor the ON/OFF switch. Your frustration often peaks when you're fighting what you should naturally respond to.

The Body Reader

Your sacral is literal—it's a gut response. "Uh-huh" or "unh-unh." Not a thought, a sound. Practice asking yourself yes/no questions and listening for the body's response, not the mind's answer.

The Herbalist

Generators need to fully discharge energy before sleep. If you're lying awake with energy, your sacral hasn't emptied. Physical activity until pleasantly tired is your best sleep medicine.

The Strategist

Your strategy is respond, not initiate. Translation: stop creating opportunities from thin air. Instead, make yourself available and visible, then respond to what shows up. Trust the sacral.

The Skeptic

Human Design isn't science. But if the Generator description fits— especially the frustration when initiating vs. satisfaction when responding—use it as a framework. The proof is in the lived experience.

The Mystic

Generators are the builders of the new world. But you can't build what you're not lit up by. Satisfaction is your compass—when work feels satisfying (even when hard), you're on path.

Projector

Vol. 20 · The Five Types

The Astrologer

Projector energy is lunar—you wax and wane. This culture rewards solar consistency, but you're designed for rhythm. Honor your phases; rest between invitations is not laziness.

The Body Reader

You absorb others' energy. That exhaustion that rest doesn't fix? That's absorbed energy you haven't discharged. Before bed, actively release what isn't yours. Feel into: what's mine, what's theirs?

The Herbalist

Projectors need deep rest and rich nourishment. You can't run on coffee and willpower. Bone broth, not salads. Warming foods, gentle herbs. You're rebuilding, not just maintaining.

The Strategist

Your strategy—wait for invitation—is the hardest one. It feels passive. But your success comes through right recognition, not hustling. What if you focused on visibility (being seen) instead of proving yourself?

The Skeptic

If the Projector description fits your experience—especially the energy inconsistency and bitterness when not recognized—it's useful language. But don't use it as excuse to not try. It's a framework, not a limitation.

The Mystic

Bitterness is your teacher. It says: I gave where I wasn't invited, or I'm comparing myself to Generators. Your path is different—less about doing, more about being the one others turn to.

Manifestor

Vol. 20 · The Five Types

The Astrologer

Manifestor energy is like lightning—powerful, brief, impactful. You're not meant to sustain like Generators. Your rhythm is: impact, rest, impact. When you try to maintain constant output, anger builds.

The Body Reader

Your closed aura means you don't need others' energy—and don't want it. But informing creates cooperation. It's not asking permission; it's reducing the friction your power naturally creates.

The Herbalist

You need recovery between bursts. Don't expect yourself to maintain Generator pace. Rest isn't weakness; it's how you refill the lightning.

The Strategist

You can initiate—but timing matters. Not every impulse deserves action. Before you move: inform those affected. Three words can prevent three weeks of resistance.

The Skeptic

Manifestor independence can become isolation. If your anger is constant, examine: am I informing, or am I creating resistance by going alone?

The Mystic

Your gift is initiating the new. But initiation requires death of the old. Your anger often signals: something needs to end so something can begin.

Manifesting Generator

Vol. 20 · The Five Types

The Astrologer

Your energy carries both solar Generator consistency and lightning-fast Manifestor bursts. You might notice certain planetary transits amplify your urge to skip ahead or pivot entirely. Consider tracking when these surges hit—there could be cosmic rhythms beneath your restlessness.

The Body Reader

Your sacral responds quickly, but your body also wants to move before the mind catches up. That physical urgency—hands reaching, feet shifting—is real intelligence. You might practice pausing just long enough to feel the full-body yes before launching into action.

The Herbalist

Your high-output nature could benefit from adaptogenic support—herbs that help the body modulate between intense activity and recovery. Consider nourishing practices that honor both your Generator endurance and your need for quick regeneration between bursts of creative fire.

The Strategist

You're the multi-passionate type. Your gift is speed and versatility; your challenge is finishing. If you're starting ten things and completing none, return to your strategy: only respond to true yeses.

The Skeptic

The MG category is sometimes criticized as too broad—one third of humanity is a lot of variety. If the description resonates, use what serves you. But your unique pattern of response-then-action might look different from other MGs. Evidence lives in your personal experience, not the label.

The Mystic

You carry the sacred paradox of waiting and initiating, patience and speed. Your path might include learning when to honor the Generator's deep response and when to trust the Manifestor's initiating spark. Both are real; both are you. The dance between them is your unique medicine.

Reflector

Vol. 20 · The Five Types

The Astrologer

You are literally lunar—your decision-making cycle matches the moon's. This isn't metaphor; it's your design. For big choices, start when the moon is new and wait until it returns. You'll know by then.

The Body Reader

You absorb everything. Your openness is your gift and your vulnerability. After being with people, you must actively discharge what you picked up. Who you are alone is your truth.

The Herbalist

Your completely open design might benefit from gentle, grounding practices that help you return to your own baseline. Consider calming nervines and nourishing herbs that support your sensitive system. After time in crowds, you could use cleansing rituals—salt baths, gentle teas—to release what you absorbed.

The Strategist

Your strategy of waiting a lunar cycle could feel impossibly slow in a fast-paced world. You might consider building structures that buy you time— phrases like "let me sit with this" or scheduling follow-ups after the moon returns. Your patience is not procrastination; it's your wisdom process.

The Skeptic

Being only one percent of the population, Reflector descriptions are based on limited samples. Your openness is real, but how it manifests might differ from textbook descriptions. Consider experimenting with the lunar cycle strategy and tracking results—your lived experience is the only valid evidence.

The Mystic

You reflect the collective. Your emotions, your energy—often not yours. Your wisdom comes from noticing: what stays consistent across the 28-day sampling? That's your clarity.
