What this book is

Seven centers, each with its Sanskrit name, its location, its color and element, and — most usefully — three distinct states rather than the usual binary of open and blocked.

Balanced, underactive, overactive. The third state is the one most chakra books omit, and it is the one that explains the most: too much throat center is not eloquence, it is talking over people. Too much heart is not love, it is losing yourself in someone.

The Body Reader treats the centers as a map of real sensation. The Skeptic is clear that there is no anatomical structure here — and just as clear that the chest tightens when you are grieving, and that a map of where feeling lands in the body is useful whatever you call it.

Where this comes from

Earliest surviving evidence

A small stone shrine chamber at night, lit by a single butter lamp.

The Kubjikamata Tantra and related Sanskrit tantric works

North India and Nepal · Sanskrit · 900 CE

Tantric manuals describing chakras as points for visualisation and ritual practice within a yogic body. The number varies by text and by lineage — four, five, six, seven, nine, twelve. The influential six-plus-one arrangement is fixed relatively late; the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, the text most Western accounts ultimately depend on, was written in 1577.

How it reached you

  1. 1577

    Purnananda, Sat-Cakra-Nirupana

Describes the six chakras plus the sahasrara. Each is given a Sanskrit seed syllable, a petal count, a deity and a colour — and the colours are not a spectrum.

  2. 1919

Sir John Woodroffe, writing as Arthur Avalon, The Serpent Power

Translates Purnananda into English. This single translation is the channel through which nearly all Western chakra material arrives.

  3. 1927

    C. W. Leadbeater, The Chakras

A Theosophist describes the chakras from claimed clairvoyant observation. His account differs from the Sanskrit sources and from later New Age writing, and it is the point at which the chakras become a Western psychological system rather than a ritual one.

  4. 1977

Christopher Hills, Nuclear Evolution: Discovery of the Rainbow Body

Maps the seven colours of the Newtonian spectrum onto the seven chakras in order, red at the base to violet at the crown. This is where the rainbow comes from.

  5. 1987

    Anodea Judith, Wheels of Life

Fuses the rainbow chakras with developmental psychology, producing the therapeutic system taught almost universally today.

The version you have actually met

1977 · Christopher Hills, elaborated by Anodea Judith

The seven rainbow-coloured chakras with psychological themes are a twentieth-century Western construction — younger than the ballpoint pen — assembled from a 1577 Sanskrit text, a 1919 translation, a 1927 Theosophical reading and a 1977 colour theory.

What you have probably been told

The seven rainbow chakras are ancient Vedic knowledge.

The Vedas do not describe them. The tantric sources are medieval, disagree on how many there are, and assign colours that are not a spectrum. The rainbow ordering dates from 1977.

Hills, Nuclear Evolution, 1977; Woodroffe, The Serpent Power, 1919

Each chakra corresponds to an endocrine gland.

The gland correspondences are Leadbeater's, offered in 1927 as clairvoyant observation. They are not in any Sanskrit source and were not derived from anatomy.

Leadbeater, The Chakras, 1927

What survives the correction

Seven ordered places in the body, from the ground you stand on to the top of your head, is a good map for a body scan — and body scans have real, measured effects on attention and on stress reactivity. The map does not need to be ancient to work as a route.

What can be established

Traditional

What survives

The body scan. Working attention deliberately up the body from the base to the crown has been tested extensively and produces real, moderate effects on pain, stress reactivity and mood. Seven ordered stations are a good route for it.

What does not

Chakras as energy centres corresponding to endocrine glands. The gland correspondences are Leadbeater's clairvoyant claims from 1927, the rainbow colours are Christopher Hills's from 1977, and no measurement has ever found anything at the locations.

What has been tested

Kabat-Zinn (1982)

General Hospital Psychiatry 4(1) · 51 patients

Tested Body-scan-based mindfulness training for chronic pain patients

Found Significant reductions in pain and mood disturbance sustained at follow-up

Since Yes; the body scan is now one of the better-evidenced components of MBSR

Goldberg, Tucker et al. (2018)

Clinical Psychology Review 59

Tested Mindfulness-based interventions against active control conditions, meta-analysis of 142 trials

Found Effects comparable to established treatments for depression and anxiety; smaller than uncontrolled studies suggest

Since This is the replication-aware synthesis

Various (None)

No published measurement

Tested Whether chakras correspond to any detectable anatomical or energetic structure

Found No measurement has ever detected them. There is no instrument reading and no proposed mechanism.

Since Not applicable

What would change this rating

Any physical measurement distinguishing a chakra site from adjacent tissue, or a trial in which attention directed at the seven traditional points outperforms attention directed at seven arbitrary ones. The second study is easy and has not been done.

A rating that no possible finding could alter is an opinion. Every volume names the result that would move it.

What it cannot establish

Centuries of observation, no demonstrated mechanism. Read as a mirror. The attestation date given for this system (c.900 CE) rests on the tantric systematisation of the centres; it dates the system, not any claim the system makes.

Every volume states its own limits. See all 23.

Root

Vol. 13 · The Seven Centres

The Astrologer

The Root chakra resonates with Saturn's stabilizing energy and the earth signs of your chart. When Saturn transits your first or fourth house, Root themes become more prominent. Consider how your natal Saturn placement reflects your relationship with security and structure. Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo placements often indicate natural grounding gifts.

The Body Reader

Your Root lives in your legs, feet, and pelvic floor - the parts that literally touch the earth. Notice right now: are your feet firmly planted or hovering? Is your weight evenly distributed? When the Root is underactive, you might feel a floating sensation or chronic tension in the lower back as your body tries to compensate for missing ground.

The Herbalist

Root vegetables literally embody this chakra's medicine - beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, ginger. These foods grow in darkness, creating strength through patience. Consider also grounding herbs like ashwagandha, burdock root, and dandelion root, which draw their power from below the surface.

The Strategist

If you're feeling ungrounded, start with the most basic needs: sleep, food, shelter, safety. Are any of these genuinely unstable, or is the fear bigger than the reality? Try the exercise of listing what you actually have - not what you lack. Sometimes anxiety about security persists even when the foundation is solid.

The Skeptic

While grounding exercises can reduce anxiety symptoms, persistent feelings of insecurity or fear could indicate an anxiety disorder or trauma response that benefits from professional treatment. If financial instability is creating stress, a financial advisor might help more than energy work alone.

The Mystic

Muladhara asks the fundamental question: do you belong here? Your body chose this earth, this time, this form. The Root isn't just about survival - it's about the sacred "yes" to incarnation. When you touch the earth, you're touching the body of the mother who agreed to hold you.

Sacral

Vol. 13 · The Seven Centres

The Astrologer

The Sacral chakra resonates with the Moon and Venus - emotional tides and the capacity for pleasure. Water sign placements (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) often indicate natural emotional attunement. Notice how lunar transits affect your emotional and creative flow - many find the waxing moon enhances creative energy while the waning moon supports release.

The Body Reader

Your Sacral lives in the bowl of your pelvis, where you hold fluidity and creativity. Notice your hips right now - are they mobile or locked? Many people unconsciously clench this area, restricting the flow of feeling and life force. Gentle hip circles or swaying movements can begin to release what's held here.

The Herbalist

Hydration is Sacral medicine - water itself, juicy fruits, soups, and broths. Consider also herbs that support emotional flow: rose for the heart's fluid feelings, damiana for creative and sensual vitality, or orange peel for joyful warmth. Sweet, watery foods honor this chakra's nature.

The Strategist

If creative or emotional blocks are present, try moving the body before trying to think your way through. The Sacral responds to physical flow before mental effort. Schedule pleasure and creativity as non-negotiable - if you wait until you "feel like it," you might wait forever.

The Skeptic

While chakra work can support emotional wellbeing, persistent emotional numbness, mood swings, or addictive patterns often indicate conditions that benefit from professional treatment. Sexual difficulties, in particular, can have medical or psychological causes worth investigating before assuming "blocked energy."

The Mystic

Svadhisthana means "one's own dwelling" - this is where you live as a feeling being. The water here is your essential nature: adaptable, receptive, creative, capable of taking any form. When you block feeling to stay safe, you block aliveness itself. Can you trust the current?

Solar Plexus

Vol. 13 · The Seven Centres

The Astrologer

The Solar Plexus resonates with the Sun and Mars - your core identity and willful action. Strong fire sign placements (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) often indicate natural confidence, while challenging aspects to your Sun might reveal where self-worth became complicated. Solar transits illuminate this center's themes.

The Body Reader

Your Solar Plexus lives in your belly - the "gut" that knows before the mind does. Notice this area right now: is it soft and warm or tight and defended? Digestive tension often reflects held power struggles. When you can't "stomach" something, your body is speaking about boundaries and agency.

The Herbalist

Warming, bitter herbs support this fire center - ginger for digestive fire, turmeric for transformation, dandelion root for healthy processing. Yellow foods like lemons, squash, and corn honor this chakra. Consider also how you eat: rushed meals feed nothing well; mindful eating stokes digestive power.

The Strategist

If confidence is low, try building it through small wins rather than waiting to feel powerful. Action often precedes feeling. Make a list of things you've accomplished - your brain forgets evidence that contradicts limiting beliefs. Boundaries aren't aggressive; they're simply clear communication about limits.

The Skeptic

While energy work can support self-esteem, persistent low self-worth often has roots in early experiences, depression, or other conditions that benefit from therapy. Digestive issues should be evaluated medically. Don't use chakra imbalance as an explanation for problems that have practical solutions.

The Mystic

Manipura means "city of jewels" - this is where you recognize your inherent worth. The fire here doesn't need external fuel; it is your birthright. True power isn't domination but knowing who you are so completely that others' opinions become interesting but not definitive.

Heart

Vol. 13 · The Seven Centres

The Astrologer

The Heart chakra resonates with Venus's capacity for love and connection. Your Venus sign and house placement reveal your love language and where you seek harmony. Libra placements often indicate natural relational gifts, while challenging Venus aspects might show where love became complicated or conditional.

The Body Reader

Your Heart center lives in the chest, where breath and feeling meet. Notice your posture right now: is your chest open or protected? Many unconsciously armor this area, rounding shoulders forward, collapsing the space where vulnerability lives. Even a few heart-opening breaths can begin to shift this pattern.

The Herbalist

Heart-tonic herbs support this center: hawthorn for physical and emotional heart health, rose for opening to love, motherwort for when the heart feels wounded. Green foods - leafy vegetables, herbs, matcha - honor this chakra's color. Consider also how you nourish your relationships, not just yourself.

The Strategist

If the heart feels closed, start with self-compassion - you cannot give what you don't have. Practice receiving small kindnesses without immediately reciprocating. If over-giving is the pattern, experiment with doing 10% less and notice what happens. Healthy love requires boundaries, not their absence.

The Skeptic

While heart-opening practices can support emotional wellbeing, persistent intimacy fears, grief, or relationship patterns often benefit from therapy. If you're experiencing physical heart symptoms, see a doctor. Forgiveness is valuable but can't be forced; sometimes professional support helps with genuine release.

The Mystic

Anahata means "unstruck" - the sound of the heart that was never wounded, the love that cannot be broken because it was never created. Beneath all the opening and closing, the Heart center points to what remains whole through everything: the love that you are, not the love you perform.

Throat

Vol. 13 · The Seven Centres

The Astrologer

The Throat chakra resonates with Mercury - how you think, speak, and process information. Your Mercury sign reveals your communication style. Gemini and Virgo placements often indicate verbal facility, while challenging Mercury aspects might show where expression became complicated. Mercury retrogrades invite Throat chakra reflection.

The Body Reader

Your Throat center lives where you swallow or speak. Notice your neck and jaw right now - soft or held? Many unconsciously grip the throat to hold back words or feelings. The thyroid gland lives here too; unexpressed truth sometimes shows up as physical throat tension or voice changes.

The Herbalist

Throat-soothing herbs support this center: slippery elm for coating and protection, licorice root for sweetness in speech, sage for clarity and cleansing. Blue foods are rare but blueberries honor this chakra. Consider also how speaking and silence alternate in your life - both are medicine.

The Strategist

If expression feels blocked, try writing before speaking - journaling can clarify what wants to be said. If you over-talk, practice the discipline of silence or asking questions instead of filling space. Communication isn't just speaking; it's also the courage to listen without formulating responses.

The Skeptic

While vocal exercises and expression practices can help, persistent social anxiety or fear of speaking might benefit from therapy or social skills training. Thyroid issues require medical attention. Don't assume all throat symptoms are energetic when they could have physical causes.

The Mystic

Vishuddha means "especially pure" - this is where truth, undiluted, can finally be spoken. The Throat chakra isn't about saying everything; it's about the alignment between inner knowing and outer expression. When you speak from this purity, you don't need many words - each one carries the full weight of your being.

Third Eye

Vol. 13 · The Seven Centres

The Astrologer

The Third Eye resonates with Neptune and the Moon - intuitive knowing beyond rational thought. Strong water sign or 12th house placements often indicate natural psychic sensitivity. Neptune transits can open this center (sometimes uncomfortably), while squares or oppositions might indicate where intuition became confused or mistrusted.

The Body Reader

Your Third Eye lives at the brow point, but notice also the quality of your vision - both literal and metaphorical. Tension around the eyes, headaches at the forehead, or difficulty focusing might indicate this center's struggle. Softening the gaze, allowing peripheral vision, can begin to open what's contracted here.

The Herbalist

Herbs that support clear seeing include ginkgo for mental circulation, blue vervain for visionary access, and mugwort for dream enhancement (use mindfully). Consider also how screen time versus stargazing affects your inner vision. The Third Eye benefits from darkness and rest as much as from activation.

The Strategist

If intuition feels blocked, try distinguishing between intuition (a quiet knowing) and anxiety (a loud fear). They feel different in the body. Keep an intuition journal - note hunches and check their accuracy over time. If overthinking is the issue, set a timer for analysis; when it rings, act on what you know.

The Skeptic

While intuition can be valuable, don't confuse it with confirmation bias or wishful thinking. "I just knew" often means "I was lucky this time." If you're experiencing persistent confusion, concentration problems, or disturbing visions, consider neurological evaluation or mental health support rather than assuming energetic causes.

The Mystic

Ajna means "command" - this is the seat from which wisdom directs your life when you let it. The Third Eye isn't about seeing special things but about seeing what is without distortion. True insight requires the courage to see yourself as clearly as you see everything else.

Questions

What is in The Seven Centres?

All 7 centres of the system, in 1 part. Each one is read by the six voices of the Council in turn, then followed by space to answer for yourself.

How well evidenced is this system?

Centuries of observation, no demonstrated mechanism. Read as a mirror. On the series' six-point ledger it is rated traditional.

How old is it?

The system is first attested c.900 CE, on the basis of the tantric systematisation of the centres. That dates the system, not any claim the system makes.

What can The Seven Centres not tell me?

Centuries of observation, no demonstrated mechanism. Read as a mirror. The attestation date given for this system (c.900 CE) rests on the tantric systematisation of the centres; it dates the system, not any claim the system makes.

Who are the six voices?

An Astrologer who reads timing, a Body Reader who asks where a thing lands in you, a Herbalist who asks what it costs, a Strategist who wants your next concrete step, a Skeptic who pushes back on all of it, and a Mystic who goes further than the other five. They appear in every chapter, in that order, and they disagree.

How long is it?

57 printed pages at 6 x 9 inches — roughly 1 hours and 16 minutes of reading, though most people use it a chapter at a time rather than front to back.

Can I read some of it first?

Yes. 6 complete readings from this volume are published free below, and every chapter title is listed on this page.
